Why a project coach?
Projects rarely succeed or fail due to a lack of planning. They fail due to a lack of awareness - about assumptions that are never questioned, about patterns that repeat themselves, about people who no longer say what they think.
A project coach instils that awareness. As an independent outsider, without a political agenda, but with a keen eye on what's really going on. Not to take over – but to strengthen what is already there.
The “P” in PM is as much about ‘people’ management as it is about ‘project’ management.” - Cornelius Fichtner
In agile and hybrid environments, the need for coaching is clearer than ever. Teams of specialists strive for self-organisation – but that ability doesn't arise on its own. The transition from task-oriented to goal-oriented work requires guidance. That is precisely where a project coach makes a difference.
Project coach and project manager: two roles, one goal
The project manager is ultimately responsible for the outcome. They monitor the schedule, manage stakeholders, ensure communication, and keep track of progress. It's a demanding role – and in complex environments with multiple working methods, even the best project manager can reach their limits.
The project coach complements what the project manager doesn't always get around to: the human and process aspects. Not as a competitor, but as a reinforcement.
Together, they ensure a project is delivered not only on time and within budget, but by the right people, in the right way.
Project Training supports projects in the areas that truly matter:
- Clearly defining the project brief: what is the real question, what is the desired outcome?
- Strengthening goal-oriented collaboration within teams
- Identifying and removing obstacles to implementation
- Making bias, assumptions and fixed cultural patterns visible
- Developing skills in team members and leaders
- Making tensions and conflicts discussable
- Guiding evaluations and retrospectives — honest and constructive
- Advise from broad experience, including in defence and IT environments
We work with everyone involved in the project – from the steering committee to employees. Because a project is only as strong as the people who carry it.
When to engage a project coach?
When you need a sparring partner without a direct stake. Someone who looks from a distance, asks the right questions, and helps break patterns.
But also when a project gets stuck. When collaboration becomes difficult. When the brief remains vague or when evaluations don't go beyond a polite review.
We are involved at every stage — at the start, halfway through, or at the end. Always with the same question: what does this project and this team need now?
